An LMIA is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that gives an employer permission to hire a temporary worker through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job. A positive LMIA is sometimes called a confirmation letter.
Once your prospective employer is issued the positive LMIA, you can apply for an employer-specific work permit. The LMIA is usually given for a specific period of time and the work permit issued will match that period. The work permit will include the conditions of your work including the name of your employer, how long you can work and location where you can work (if applicable).
You can apply for an LMIA based work permit if you are outside Canada and you may also be eligible to apply for an LMIA based work permit if you are already in Canada on valid temporary status.
