A study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada.
Legal residents of certain countries may be eligible to get their study permit faster by applying through the Student Direct Stream.
You can come to study if you have a Letter of Acceptance and proof of enrollment at a DLI in Canada. You must also prove to a Visa Officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.
You must prove that you have enough funds to pay for your tuition, living expenses and return transportation, and in some cases, you may be required to provide a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution. In certain cases, you must also prove your medical admissibility through a medical exam by an authorized panel physician and your criminal admissibility through a police certificate.
The expiry date on your study permit tells you when you must stop studying and leave Canada. If you want to keep studying, you need to submit an application to extend your study permit.
You should apply at least 30 days before your study permit expires, and make sure that your passport is valid for the period of extension that you are requesting. You must also make sure that your institution is still on the list of Canadian DLIs.
